The local farmer’s market had a little petting zoo today. Although the farmer’s market was a small event, the petting zoo had quite a few animals. There were a lot of sheep, some chicken and ducks, bunnies, a turkey, and a cute little piglet. Allison tried to pet as many animals as she could reach. I am teaching her to love animals, and so far she is not scared of them unless they (usually dogs) come running at her and frighten her.
We missed strawberry picking this year but Allison and I did get to go pick some blueberries. It was our first time doing this and it was a fun experience. Allison helped in both the picking and the tasting parts. Blueberries are not my favorite fruit so I did not get a whole bucket full, like my friends did. There was a farm close by that had raspberries- a fruit I love- but I had to get home and make lunch so I could not make the trip.
It is not quite summer yet but it sure feels like it. Allison and I have visited a fair share of libraries and parks so far. As it gets hotter, we will start to add pools to that list of activities. And festivals. Today was a busy Friday. First, on our way to go to Schiller park with some friends, Allison and I visited yet another branch of the Columbus Metropolitan Library. Recently, I visited what I hope will become my favorite branch- the Hilliard one- to pick up some reserved items. After, that same day, I went to Homestead Park not too far away. This park was busy and very fun. Today, Schiller park was also very busy. There was some sort of summer program at the recreation center so the park was filled with elementary aged kids for the majority of the time we were there.
Unlike our last zoo trip, the petting zoo was open this time. This was the highlight of Allison’s day because she really enjoyed feeding and brushing the goats. We spent a good amount of time in the petting zoo and I was able to get a lot of photos of her in there. At first, she didn’t want to touch the goats so I had to slowly ease her into petting them. Once she saw that they weren’t a threat, she was happy to play with them, brush their hair, and even pick up the straw laying around to feed them.
It was beautiful day today and a large group of us stay at home moms decided to spend it at the Columbus Zoo. It was a little difficult to navigate with 8 adults and more than twice that amount in children, but it was still very fun. We all helped each other with the kids and it was a great exercise. I’m sure the kids all had fun- even the cranky ones that missed their nap times. Allison rode in a wagon with her cousin and she was good for the majority of the time. She still wore herself out and fell asleep in the car soon after we left for home. I brought my camera along but it was difficult to take pictures because the kids are either always on the move, or there are too many people and things in the background.
There are days where the weather warms up, and others where the cold feels bitter. The good days are starting to out-number the bad and I am very excited about this. I am already deciding on summer plans because there are many days in summer and I plan on spending a lot of them out of the house. Some places I want to visit with Allison are local coffee shops, the Columbus Zoo & Aquarium, plenty of pools and more. I might also go to the Arts Festival again this year because last year Allison was still a baby and she did not get to enjoy it much. Also, I will definitely be going to the Ohio State Fair again this year. Last year, Allison got to ride a pony and I think she would like to do that again this year, as well as many other things. The fair is family friendly so it is a fun thing for all ages. I would also like to visit more of the parks in Columbus and in the surrounding areas. One of my favorites so far is Schiller park in German village because it has a lot of shops nearby that you can walk to to grab a book or a delicious cup of coffee.
Overview: We are more than halfway into our vacation and it has been filled with a lot of fun, sun and adventure. Allison loves swimming and enjoys playing in the sand even more. She is a little scared of the ocean but she likes swimming in the pool after she warms up to the idea. At the beach, she just plays in the sand and tries to either fling it at people or eat it. She’s also had her fair share of sandy grapes and other snacks on this trip. I’ve been using a 50spf baby sun screen but I think Allison got some color regardless. I don’t mind if she gets a little messy or sandy because it’s nothing a quick bath can’t wash off. The most annoying part of the sand and ocean though is that it causes her to get rashes quicker and I have to be more careful to prevent them.
The place my family will be going to vacation in two weeks is walking distance to a few places like Starbucks and Walmart. This year, however, my husband thought it would be a good idea for us to bring along bikes. That is why he bought me a new (used) bike and is planning on taking the one he has along as well. We also bought a bike trailer so Allison can come riding with us. The Schwinn trailer he got fits two kids so Allison’s cousin Liana (whose family is also going on vacation with us) can ride as well. I think bringing bikes will be a nice change and will give us a chance to exercise more on vacation and enjoy the nice weather in Florida while not being cooped up in a car for most of the time. Of course, we will still have to take the car to Miami because the ride is still quite long.
A few days ago, we decided to check out the nature center at the local state park. It was somewhat recently built but we had not seen it yet because I was not really aware of it. The inside has an indoor stream where you can see various fish swimming around. There are also a few turtles for show (like the one Allison is looking at). You can see a bunch of different animal pelts in one room and my favorite were the white rabbit and the beaver because they were some of the softest ones. There is also a room at the nature center where kids can look at an interactive map of the park and read books and play with stuffed animals. My favorite part, however, was the outdoor viewing of the bison from a balcony at the nature center. They were too far for Allison to be interested but I’m sure that we can revisit when she gets older. It will be more fun the older she gets because she will be able to ask questions and actually become interested in learning things. Columbus has a ton of places I still want to explore and, once older, Allison will become a great companion.
