The local farmer’s market had a little petting zoo today. Although the farmer’s market was a small event, the petting zoo had quite a few animals. There were a lot of sheep, some chicken and ducks, bunnies, a turkey, and a cute little piglet. Allison tried to pet as many animals as she could reach. I am teaching her to love animals, and so far she is not scared of them unless they (usually dogs) come running at her and frighten her.
Allison is at the age where she always watches what I do and often mimicks me. This is great because she learns a lot and I love having a mini-me. However, I also have to be more careful in what I say and do so she does not pick up on some of my bad habits. I am really glad I had a girl as a first child because she can be my spoiled little princess.
Visiting your local park is a great way to explore the outdoors. There are plenty of city, state, and metro parks in Ohio and a great deal of them in the Central Ohio area. Best of all, most of the activities at the park are free or low cost. There are plenty of things to do in the parks in summer and I plan to going to some of these events. Now that Allison is becoming curious, she will enjoy events where she can look at animals or take a stroll through scenery.
We missed strawberry picking this year but Allison and I did get to go pick some blueberries. It was our first time doing this and it was a fun experience. Allison helped in both the picking and the tasting parts. Blueberries are not my favorite fruit so I did not get a whole bucket full, like my friends did. There was a farm close by that had raspberries- a fruit I love- but I had to get home and make lunch so I could not make the trip.
Before I bought Allison chalk, she tried to draw with the rocks found at the side of our house. She learned to do this from me and my husband. The other day, I bought her some chalk so she could use that instead. So far she likes it and I hope she learns where she can and can’t draw; not to draw in the house.
It is not quite summer yet but it sure feels like it. Allison and I have visited a fair share of libraries and parks so far. As it gets hotter, we will start to add pools to that list of activities. And festivals. Today was a busy Friday. First, on our way to go to Schiller park with some friends, Allison and I visited yet another branch of the Columbus Metropolitan Library. Recently, I visited what I hope will become my favorite branch- the Hilliard one- to pick up some reserved items. After, that same day, I went to Homestead Park not too far away. This park was busy and very fun. Today, Schiller park was also very busy. There was some sort of summer program at the recreation center so the park was filled with elementary aged kids for the majority of the time we were there.
The local library has a summer reading club and I signed up both me and Allison. I hope this will get us to read more books this summer instead of watching tv. My library also does program called Zinio for Libraries by Zinio LLC. I can “borrow” a bunch of great magazines for the app and can also download them for offline reading. I love magazines and this way I don’t have to subscribe to all of my favorites. I have a few print subscriptions but I am glad I can read some others I like online for free. This app is great because it works on my iPhone, and I know a lot of e-magazines are iPad only.
Unlike our last zoo trip, the petting zoo was open this time. This was the highlight of Allison’s day because she really enjoyed feeding and brushing the goats. We spent a good amount of time in the petting zoo and I was able to get a lot of photos of her in there. At first, she didn’t want to touch the goats so I had to slowly ease her into petting them. Once she saw that they weren’t a threat, she was happy to play with them, brush their hair, and even pick up the straw laying around to feed them.
I’ll settle for the stormy nights if it means hot and sunny days. Lately, this has been the case. Flowers are starting to bloom and the grass is getting greener (and needs a mowing more often). Allison loves it outside. One of the days this week, we went to a friend’s house for a pool day. She had a bunch of activities set up in the yard for the kids to play and they had a blast. I am planning to get a little pool of our own for the backyard so I just have to go to the local dollar store store and buy it. I think Allison will enjoy cooling off in the hot sun.
